Breville Barista Express Impress Review: An Espresso Machine With Training Wheels

The espresso shots we pulled from the Solis were great and in line with the mid-level Breville Machines—the Infuser, the Barista Express, and the Barista Express Impress. The steam wand on the Solis is powerful and made terrific flat whites. We cannot emphasize enough how big of a plus that is in a category filled with counter hogs. According to Wong, the De’Longhi La Specialista Arte is a great approachable home espresso machine with excellent temperature control. “I love that it comes with tools that a barista would use in the café,” he says. Say, for instance, a commercial machine-style steam wand for latte art.

Lastly, consider that you can also use the typical automatic Breville espresso machine in a semi-automatic manner, which can be useful if different members of your household have different coffee goals. Breville has done a fantastic job with the Duo Temp in including just the features to create great espresso and frothed milk. By doing away with any excess bells and whistles, and you’ll need to put in a bit more elbow grease. It’s a bit more hands-on than some of the other offerings on this list, but that’s not a bad thing, especially at a price. But what are the significant improvements to the Pro versus the Express? The most obvious upgrade is the LCD interface, making this model even easier to use.

Espresso machines are complicated, but at the core, they’re designed to heat water in a boiler, pressurize that water with a pump, and deliver it through a screen that distributes it directly over a tamped coffee bed. Other espresso machines with built-in grinders typically rely on the user manually tweaking how much coffee is delivered by adjusting a timer, but the Barista Express Impress goes a step further. We drank it side-by-side with the Breville Barista Express Impress, and the Jura’s flavors were a little muted in comparison, but they were all there. We know plenty of people who actually prefer a slightly toned down espresso shot. It also got high marks for its many milk drinks (as long as they were made with real cow’s milk; hamilton coffee maker as we noted above we had issues with oat milk). The texture of the milk in our flat whites and cappuccinos was thicker and smoother than what we got from any semi-automatic machine. The images of coffee drinks on the control panel seem off for a high-end machine and the body doesn’t have the same wow factor as the Jura.
