It may end up cleaning more of your home than other bots just because it fits beneath more stuff. Under the Settings menu are even more customization options, such as turning the robot to Do Not Disturb mode or telling it to charge during certain hours. It will look stupid sometimes, and that can shatter the illusion that you have an artificially intelligent magic machine. Bots also tend to struggle with thresholds, certain types of furniture supports, and sometimes even floor-to-rug transitions. We spoke with sources in the floor-care manufacturing industry to help make sense of all the low-cost, off-brand options. Check dimensions and choose a model that can easily get under couches and other furniture so you don’t have to.
The height, rounded up to the nearest half-inch, of the shortest vertical space the robotic vacuum could enter while operating. When it comes to vacuuming prowess, we want to know how effective each robot is against common crumbs and other debris, and also how it fares against much smaller particles like dust, dirt and sand. To find out, we use dry, uncooked black rice as a stand-in for the crumbs, and sand as an analogue for finer particles.
And it doesn’t get stuck on obstacles like thresholds or power cables often. Some robot vacuums, including versions of our pick, the iRobot Roomba i3+ EVO, and our also-great pick, the Roborock Q5+, are self-emptying (or auto-emptying). They each come with a big charging dock that sucks debris out of the robot through a trapdoor in the dustbin and stores the debris in a disposable bag or a bagless bin . We’ve tested the docks on these and other robot vacs, and they work and prove useful, though they fall a little short of life-changing. Instead of emptying your bot’s bin after every cleaning session, you have to empty the dock only every month or two. Everyone loves their pets, but you can’t escape the fact that their hair gets everywhere.
At just under half the price of the Ecovacs Robovacs that can mop as well – and often discounted – this certainly comes with a more affordable price tag. The lack of a self-emptying bin is a bit of a bummer here, but you’ve got other good options if that’s what matters most . Apart from that, there’s not much that you’re missing here, making this an excellent midrange pick, especially for homes with an abundance of area rugs and other low-pile carpets. No other cleaner we’ve tested cleans carpets like those better than the S7. Less than $300 is a decent price for a self-emptying robot vacuum, especially from a brand like Shark. The EZ model doesn’t map your home but still maintains wall-to-wall coverage by cleaning in methodical rows, returning to charge then resuming cleaning when necessary.
We’re more uneasy about what the companies may do with collected information in the future, such as selling it to third parties; the makers of our current picks don’t sell data for now, but privacy policies are always changing. If you’re annoyed or creeped out by the whole thing, you can either buy a non-connected bot or just never set shark pet hair vacuum up your bot’s Wi-Fi—these bots all still clean a house automatically even if you don’t connect them to the internet. Keep in mind that you can’t use interactive mapping features without an internet connection. And if you decide to sell or give away a Wi-Fi robot vacuum, be sure to factory-reset it to remove the Wi-Fi credentials.
Our tester loved that it had an obvious power switch and easy-to-use remote control. There is no mopping feature on this vacuum, but it did a pretty good job vacuuming, picking up most of the debris on its first try. It struggled with the Cheerios placed in a corner, but that’s a pretty common pain point that much more expensive models may also experience. However, this model avoided obstacles very well, including chocolate. It also has smart mapping, so you can tell it to clean or avoid specific rooms. But unlike most of its competitors, the Roomba i3 EVO is actually a sturdy, repairable appliance—and although longevity is never guaranteed, you can reasonably expect to own and use it regularly for years.
Still, that’s more than a fair tradeoff at this bargain-bin price, especially considering what a surprisingly competitive cleaner the thing is. One of the main complaints people have about their robot vacuum is that it craps out in the middle of the floor. Larger spaces require more time to clean, and it all depends on how annoyed you’ll be if it only finishes a few rooms at a time.

The Roomba i3 EVO is a better cleaner than most robot vacuums—at any price. We know this from assessing the visual results in our tests, but also from weighing the contents of the robot’s dustbin after vacuuming sessions and comparing that against the performance of other vacs. On many occasions, we also ran it immediately after other bots had done a cleaning session, and the i3 EVO would still come back with a lot of extra debris in its bin that the other bots must have left behind.
