Coleman Sundome 6 Person Dome Tent 2000036889

Whilst the tent does come with two storage pockets (which is an improvement on the smaller models), there is still no vestibule with the Sundome. Festivals aren’t the safest campgrounds for your tent, so a low-cost, reliable model might be a good investment. It’s also very easy to set up which is a plus for festivals as well. The products are low-cost but like the coleman instant tent that doesn’t mean they are low-quality.

Whether it’s hiking, family holidays, camping, touring and overlanding, climbing, splashing in the pool or making the most of the back garden, we have the outdoor and leisure equipment you need. Cost-wise, the Dark Room will set you back approximately $30 more (depending on current sale prices) compared with the regular Sundome. Many of the great points about dome tents are, that they are under normal circumstances not too heavy, making them simple to carry around. In most all cases, tents used for backpacking are of the dome type. They are generally speaking, freestanding and very straightforward to set up.

As long as you can avoid a tear or puncture, you should stay dry. However, it isn’t the design that is at risk — it is the construction. The use of weaker materials like cheap plastic clips, elastic connection points, fiberglass poles, and the tarp floor is where the Sundome could fail after harsh use. A classic dome structure, single door, and vented roof make pitching this tent relatively easy, though we had issues with the rainfly. The floor is also cheap polyethylene material — you will basically be sleeping on a tarp — and we had some pole malfunction right out of the gate.

With two people there is enough room to set up a queen size inflatable mattress, and still have room for extra gear you may want to store in the tent with you. There is a mesh gear pocket to store things like you wallet and phone in to keep them off the ground. You’ll also find a zippered opening near the door to run an electrical cord through so you can run a fan, or C-PAP machine in my case.

The pole that holds up the rainfly offers very little protection from the rain outside the tent, really only enough to keep it from getting inside the door. At only $136.99, the 6 offers a budget alternative to its high-end competitors, while still managing to squeeze in a few bells and whistles. And although it has a rather durable floor and a decent choice in materials for the canopy and rainfly, the vulnerable fiberglass poles give cause for concern. In addition, Coleman’s somewhat infamous build quality gives the Sundome a questionable lifespan. However, for occasional use this tent should serve its intended purpose.

Unlike most other camping tents, such as Kelty’s popular Discovery 6 model and its full-length rainfly, the Coleman’s partial design does not create any vestibule space. Typically, covered tent vestibules are a great place to store items like shoes, camp chairs, or anything else you’d like to keep out of the elements, but not so with the Sundome. This may not seem like a big issue as your car likely will be parked nearby, but we appreciate a good vestibule and it’s an unfortunate omission here. If there is one area where the Coleman Sundome 6 let us down the most, it certainly would be weather protection (or lack thereof). The rainfly only extends about halfway down on all sides, leaving the lower portion of the tent body exposed, and you won’t find any sealed seams to help keep water out.

The floor is also best used with a footprint or trap underneath to make sure it isn’t damaged. This 4-Person dome tent also comes with guy-lines to support the fiberglass poles. Coleman tents are tested in winds up to 35 miles per hour to ensure they will stand up to mild winds. This is helped in part by the 11mm shock-corded fiberglass tent poles.
