I independently buy and test electric shavers and I’ve been sharing my findings on this site for almost 10 years, hopefully helping others choose a suitable shaver. If you want an electric razor that shaves really close, I don’t think the Norelco 2300 is the right choice. I would consider something like the Panasonic Arc 3 (which works best when used more often).

From past experience, my skin doesn’t get along too well with this type of shaver. And we’re pretty much done with the main features of this shaver. As you can see, there’s not a lot going on since it lacks the bells and whistles of the high-end rotary razors, but fortunately, (almost) all the basics are covered. While the shaving unit itself is fixed (unlike the ones of the more expensive Philips models), the three heads can flex inward and remain in contact with the skin without the need to apply excessive pressure.
To get the smoothest, most comfortable electric shave, no matter which shaver you choose, you need to remember that electrics can’t easily get as close as a blade. Most electric shaver makers offer advice on how to get the optimal shave. Braun, for example, suggests shaving first thing in the morning. (“We recommend that you shave before you wash, since the skin tends to be slightly swollen after washing.”) Philips Norelco says to wash but not shower (“…otherwise your skin will be hot, puffy…”). Dan has dabbled with electric razors most of his adult life, and his technique is based mostly on saving time. Since he has two kids, he’s always in a rush first thing in the morning; when using a manual razor, he shaves in the shower.
As for negatives, my only real issue was in the form of some post-shave itching/rash on the neck. It wasn’t anything major and eventually the skin calmed down. I’ll start with the comfort because for me it was easily the most impressive thing about this razor. Overall, the build quality and ergonomics are really good for this price point philips trimmer blade and the only real negative is the absence of a travel lock. Luckily the shaver is very lightweight and you probably won’t have any serious issues during use. As a side note, on the back of the shaver there’s a small area that appears to have the same textured rubber insert, but it’s actually just plastic so it’s not as grippy.
That extra power and performance come at a dollar and design cost. Series 9 razors are notably bulkier than Series 7 razors, and some testers found the Series 9 razors tough to maneuver in tight spots (like the equally ginormous Panasonic Arc5, which this Braun line somewhat mimics). The top-of-the-line Philips Norelco model is the best rotary shaver we’ve ever used. The 7085cc and the 7020s provide philips shaver the same high-quality shave as our pick, but they each come with different sets of accoutrements. We think the new 7071cc has the features that most people want or need, but prices tend to fluctuate, and if you find one of the others for significantly less you won’t be missing a lot by picking that model up. We are very sorry to hear that your experience with our shaver was far from perfect.
