This is an exceedingly moist tobacco. Yet, surprisingly, it burns well and is not difficult to keep lit. With a restrained sipping technique a pipe full can last a long time, and many of those who smoke this tobacco exclusively can prolong the smoke for an extended time. The taste is surprisingly restrained for a tobacco with such a pronounced room note aroma.
Admittedly, I’m an aromatic smoker, and I like a sweet, smooth, light smoke. Captain Black White was my first Lane limited product many years ago. I was attracted to it because of the room note. I found this to be my everyday tobacco for many years, and I still smoke it quite a bit. CBW has a very pleasant, creamy vanilla flavor that is not overpowering. I would highly recommend Captain Black White to any pipe smoker, beginner and veteran alike.
Still smells great, still tastes good. The fond remembrance at the first light turns to boredom halfway down the bowl. No variation – I prefer a bit of complexity. If you’ve never tried it, you should.
I don’t get where other reviewer’s are getting chemical smells and other nonsense. It’s made with food grade flavorings. Lane is one of the most respected blenders. They are not going to mess up a good thing like being one of the top pipe tobacco distribution companies by putting junk in their blends. You have to like aromatic tobacco to even consider enjoying this.
This is the tobacco I grew up around, and smoked in college. I’d love to drive a Bentley…but not to the market everyday, you know? Anyways, comparing this to a high profile brand does peterson pipes it a dis-service and frankly, if you only smoke High End tinned brands, why did you pick up the Captain anyways? So, it is an OTC ouch blend, Pouch Note is great, potent though.
I never even opened it, just threw it onto the lower shelf of my tobacco hoard, and it’s been through three moves with me since then. Today, I found it, and decided to give it a try. Captain Black “white” is my main smoke on a day to day basis. I should note that I have briar and corn cob pipes in my collection and for reasons I do not know this tobacco is excellent in a cob but just ok in a briar. Non smokers love the smell of this tobacco, and it will stay lit for the whole bowl with some tamping from time to time.
I recall my great uncle smoking this stuff and all the wonderful memories I had at their place. The smell was always like seeing a friend whenever I came to their house and it has a very special place in my heart. Long on presentation, short on delivery. Definitely better blends out there at a better price. Keeping in mind in which class the CB tobaccos belong, easily accessible and inexpensive, this is a good tobacco. I had recently tried other “classier” brands of pipe tobbaco, only to find my tongue scorched no matter how finicky or carefull i was.
I do not have this problem with most of the VAs, English, or Balkans blends I prefer. Having said that my local B&M carries mostly aromatic blends, and I am learning to like them. Very pleasent smoke, nicely filled my work shop with pipe smoke. May try blending it with other tobaccos.
Never made sense to me, because the so-called ‘drug store’ brands always worked just fine. I don’t think I’ve missed anything, really. Captain Black White is one of the very best.
