The middle button lets you play or pause music as well as answer or end calls. If you press this button skull headphones twice, you can activate voice assistant. There’s also a circle button, which turns the ANC on and off.
The Sony WH-1000XM4 also has 40mm drivers but can reproduce tones up to 40 kHz (and extensively tailor its response through an extensive app). The Hesh ANC offers a sensitivity of only 99.63dB, compared to the Crusher’s—and Sony’s—105dB. Plus, the Crusher limits the total harmonic distortion to less than 1 percent, while the expands that to 3 percent. Press that volume and you’re quicker to reach distortion (not that you should attempt to reach anywhere near max sound pressure levels). In addition, the Crusher headphones are compatible with the Skullcandy app’s customizable sound features, including the ability to create an individual EQ blend.
The integrated mic does a decent job of capturing your voice, although it sounds a bit thin and dark. It also struggles to separate speech from moderately loud environments, so it’s better suited for taking calls in a quiet space like a room. That said, they have an active noise cancelling feature that can help reduce some ambient noise around you. The primary place the Skullcandy Hesh line falls short of the exclamations is that superior sound. Yes, the Hesh ANC features the same 40mm drivers and 20 Hz-20 kHz frequency range as its older Crusher cousin.
If you prefer a different sound, their companion app also has EQ presets to help tweak their sound. Their active noise cancelling feature significantly reduces ambient noise around you too and they have longer continuous battery life. Tile lets you track a device via the Tile app, and you can use this to locate the headphones, even if they’re not close. Holding the volume up for a full second will jump you forward a track, while the same on volume down returns you to the previous track. A single tap of the middle button will play/pause audio playback, as well as answer and end calls. Double tapping this button will launch your voice assistant. The most uncomfortable aspect of the form factor is where the control buttons sit.

Only in the high-frequency range does the effectiveness diminish somewhat so that a discreet whisper of a boiling kettle remains detectable. Pounding rain and the rumble of thunderstorms, on the other hand, are barely audible, while construction and street noise, as well as background voices, are clearly attenuated. The sound also seems slimmer as the bass content is reduced, and this lowers the playback volume somewhat. This sound change is not noticeable in Ambient Mode, which is impressive except for the background noise.
An app with customizable EQ would welcome, though not necessarily expected at this price. The Hesh ANC headphones are available in black, gray, or white, with circumaural earcups generously skullcandy wireless padded with memory foam and a leather-like lining. The underside of the headband is also well-padded, and the headphones feel comfortable even over long listening sessions.
