Each “room” can then fit either 5 sleeping pads or sleeping bags, or 2 queen-sized beds. One room, on the left side of the tent, will have 3 windows and the hinged D-door, while the other room will have 2 windows and the other door. The mattresses that I used in this tent are slightly smaller than queen size, but almost queen sized (give or take a few inches).
Again, because of the slant of the walls, I do also have to duck quite a bit to get in and out of the tent. In this section you will find a number of tents that are what could call “well rounded” generally speaking they have better than average ratings, most are what you would call mid sized. Yet another better option is to use bunk beds, at least for kids; the walls are steep here and the tent is so high, so it is easy to put such bunk cots inside. This is a very stable freestanding structure which you can pitch on any terrain, literally, and you can move it around when it is set up. So you do not have to stake it out, but stakes and guylines are included and do not miss doing this whenever possible.
All of these heavy-duty materials add a great deal to the weight—at nearly 25lb, this is the heaviest tent in our 2021 review. However, this was not a bother to us, as this tent really only needs to be transported from the car to the impact pad, and we’d rather heft a few extra pounds than sacrifice durability. I own a somewhat embarrassingly large collection of tents for camping—some from my backpacking days, while some are from when I switched to family car camping. However, I wouldn’t say that Coleman has the best instant tent mechanism, at least for this tent. Sometimes, one of the elbow joints of the poles would jam and won’t prop up properly, and I’d have to fold it back up and try to prop it back up again. After about 3 hours of light rain, I noticed that no water seeped through the bathtub flooring, and it was still dry, which was great.
The downside of this design is that the panels must be closed when it is raining. In such situations, this tent will not be a very pleasant place, you do not have mesh on the ceiling as typical for summer tents with a separate fly. Here, on vertical zippers, you have double flaps, plus Velcro tabs which keep them in place.
You could give this tent a knock for its weight, coming in at 18.2 lbs, and a ding for the bag size — packing this one back up did take a little extra smushing, coleman ice chest but it wasn’t too bad. The main appeal of the Coleman Instant 6 is detailed in its name. Storing the tent properly is essential for its longevity.
