Coleman Sundome 6 Review: Best Camping Tent Review

Note that there are restrictions on some products, and some products cannot be shipped to international destinations. The mesh pockets are great for storing small valuables to keep them accessible but safe. Although there might not be much extra space for fitting bigger families in, for a couple and one child this tent would be a great starter tent. There’s no included footprint with this tent, and we’d recommend purchasing a 10’x10’ footprint, which you’ll need to find from a third-party supplier since Coleman does not make one.

Unless you are planning to use the tent just for sleeping (and keep your gear stored somewhere else) it’s going to be too small for a family of four. Also, if you’re expecting the Skydome to be a quick-pitch, well it’s not. And the last disadvantage is that it’s also more expensive than your regular classic Sundome Tent. Sadly coleman screen tent though, my Skydome Tent didn’t have an e-port, while all my Sundome tents came with e-ports. But I could still easily fit 4 regular sleeping pads, or 2 double pads, inside the tent without leftover space, or 1 queen-sized bed with plenty of leftover space. In my opinion, the Coleman is the best waterproof tent on the market.

Keep in mind that as you size down in capacity, you do lose a significant amount of headroom. The Sundome 2, for example, has a maximum peak height of just 4 feet compared to 6 on the Sundome 6, and that’s a very significant difference. The Coleman® 6-Person Sundome® Dark Room™ Dome Camping Tent blocks 90% of sunlight so you can put the kids to bed early or sleep in past sunrise. It also reduces heat inside the tent (vs. a comparable Coleman tent) for more comfortable rest at any time. The Coleman® 4-Person Sundome® Dark Room™ Dome Camping Tent blocks 90% of sunlight (vs. a comparable Coleman tent) so you can put the kids to bed early or sleep in past sunrise.

Investing in some waterproofing sealer is DEFINITELY a good idea – not even just for this model, but lower budget tents in general.

I have used this tent in the wind, rain, snow, and sun without any problems. We bought a replacement pole for the tent when we got home, but have since turned this into the backup/extra tent for when we take friends. For ourselves, we did what we should have done all along – Spent the money on a quality tent that will last us many years of camping (We bought the REI Base Camp 6). Now even with those cons I’ve mentioned this is still a worthy tent and I am pleased with my purchase and the tent’s performance so far. If one of my poles breaks I could spend $36 dollars on some aluminum poles and still only have a hundred dollars invested and even at that price this tent’s still a bargain. Provide additional weather protection over front door and back window.

Even assembling the Sundome 6 solo was a smooth process, which took less than 10 minutes from start to finish at a leisurely pace. And while Coleman attaches the instructions to the inside of the storage bag, we still think it’s a good idea to do a dry run in your backyard before heading out on a trip. Despite its inexpensive price tag and overall lack of features, the Coleman Sundome is a highly durable camping tent that should have no problem standing up to years of use. The bathtub floor is made of a thick, tarp-like material, and the body and mesh don’t feel in the least bit fragile.

I mentioned earlier that there were only two fiberglass poles for this tent, the old tent used four plus small ones for the rain flap. The larger poles can easily be replaced but the ones that were used for the rain fly couldn’t be replaced. In no time at all (less then ten minutes actually), the Coleman camping tent was standing and ready to go in our back yard. Once inside, Silke commented on how well ventilated it was. This is nice in the summer, but we’ve camped in the late fall before and we were freezing.

A combination of clips and nylon sleeves connect the tent body to the poles. For ease of setup, I prefer all clips and no nylon sleeves. Nylon sleeves have a nasty habit of snagging the pole joints and separating the sections as you try to set up or take down the tent. If there’s one thing I love more than spending time in the outdoors, it’s trying out new camping gear. My initial plan was to use the tent while I was at Boy Scout summer camp in Talihina, OK.  However, when we arrived, I discovered that our camp site was situated on steeply sloped, rocky terrain. The ends of the poles started to splinter, so I fell to the tried and true remedy.

Although there is only one doorway on the Sundome, it is quite large and should allow for easy entry and exit for one person at a time. There’s no room divider for the Sundome, nor is there a vestibule. We can certainly live without the former, but the lack of a vestibule means that there’s no mudroom to store your dirty stuff, coleman instant tent which can come in particularly handy when the weather gets wet. The pole that holds up the rainfly offers very little protection from the rain outside the tent, really only enough to keep it from getting inside the door. Once the tent was pitched, I did a walk around and noted any prior damage from the previous user.
