All three of the new Schwinn ebike models have step-thru and standover versions, 20mph speed limit and 250-watt brushless geared hub drive motor. Its throttle was so lackluster and slow — especially when compared with other bikes of a similar price class — that it sometimes didn’t feel like it was powered at all. Once you’re up to speed and cruising on a flat surface, the ride quality feels smooth and reasonably quick, but the motor struggles up moderate hills. And when it comes to serious hills, the Coston gets left far behind other e-bikes. These bikes are built well and offer lifetime warranties, so you know you’ll get a long-lasting product.
The rear hub motor offers assist levels of 0-5, with 0 being no assist and 5 being the maximum assist. Of course, I wanted to try the assist, and when I did, I found that I never schwinn dealers needed more than level 1 to roll at a comfortable trail speed. The Coston CE’s battery is a bit smaller, whereas the 250W motor is just as powerful as the other Schwinn e-bikes.
Most of their models are made for casual cyclists with a single-speed drivetrain, so if you’re looking for electric mountain bikes or racing options, you might be disappointed. Some options come close to being hybrid bike models, but we recommend looking elsewhere if you need intense outdoor performance.
