Bikes of Yesterday: 1963 Schwinn Fleet Cruiser Bike

There are a few pieces I wanted for the bike that I never got around to buying. One is a working horn that fits inside the tank, and operates from the chrome button on the side. The other, is a great looking tail light that is made to fit perfectly on the rear rack. It closely matches the look of the original bike. Also, they had a front light for the fender.

The “Deluxe’s” Spring Fork gives you an extra smooth ride. If somewhat understated, yet functional comfort is what you’re looking for choose the Schwinn’s standard coaster brake Cruiser. Whitewall balloon tires and Electro-forge cantilever frame. During the Christmas break I had a bit of spare time, coupled with some bad weather and no bike to ride due to warranties. If you haven’t heard of these guys, but have a thing for quality, short documentary films, then click that link.

We’ll let you know when this bike is back in stock.

I made sure this bike was as perfect as possible. Down the street was a school with a playground that had a swing. Before I was big enough to ride the bike, my grandmother would walk me down to the playground so I could swing on the swing a bit.

What are some of the first bikes you remember riding as a kid? Honestly, I can’t remember my first bike, but I can at least remember my second and third bike. Aside from the one I rode around my neighborhood (which I’ll talk about in a future post), I did ride one other bike as a kid. The name “Schwinn” in front of the title “Cruiser” means a solid, comfortable ride on a cantilever frame bike that is always in

style. That’s why the words “Schwinn Cruiser” are something special if you agree that first class on white-walled balloons is the

only way to roll.

It is also the only year that they offered this great color combo. I was working part-time in a Schwinn shop in North County, SD, CA   The local Schwinn rep/salesman came by to do business. He was talking about doing the Roserita ride on this cool new Schwinn. Boasting about all the passing and smiling fun he had riding it, was interesting to hear.

In my mind, it is on the market for sale every day of the week. I am constantly thinking a ride down the boardwalk in Pacific Beach with a for sale sign, would garner many potential buyers. Growing up my favourite rider was David Cullinen and at the time I got into biking, he rode for Schwinn. It’s only natural then that I schwinn cruiser wanted a Straight 8 and a 4 Banger. But before these mountain bikes ‘Cully’ ripped on, Schwinn made some of the most sought after cruiser bikes—enter this short film. When our shop re-opens to the public following the coronavirus outbreak, we’ll be happy to discuss options for fit customization, upgrades, and accessories.
