I quickly learned that this cooler is made to go over far more than than pavement. Given that it has the name Trailmate I knew it had to go on a trail to truly earn it’s name. In our testing we had it going up trails, sitting out in the 90+ degree heat and opened and closed the door to keep grabbing beers. It kept some ice up to the 4 days even with all of these conditions!

Igloo designed the new Trailmate Series of hardside coolers with a focus on durability and better performance. The Igloo Trailmate, due to its many additional features, large size, and decent ice life, does fetch a higher asking price than most other Igloo products. For those on a tight budget or for someone who doesn’t care about the extra mobility features, there are cheaper options out there that will perform just as well (if not better) in terms of ice life. But for someone who is after a truly unique, mobile, and well-performing ice chest, the asking price is more than fair. We believe in offering the very best value, quality, and selection.
However, it still won’t be quite as tough as the simpler premium coolers on the market from Yeti, RTIC, Engel, etc. The combination of the aggressive wheels igloo soft cooler and the rigid exposed metal makes for a very tough and intimidating look. And the layout of this cooler is unique and is sure to stand out from the crowd.
As always the ambient temperature and how often you open the cooler will dictate how long the ice will stay. Though at first glance the Trailmate looks like a great deal, we’re not so sure. Its wide wheels and high clearance help it navigate a variety of challenging terrain, but the performance of this cooler in insulation and particularly its igloo soft cooler lackluster durability leaves us wanting more. But if wheels and features are what you’re after and a budget is what you’re on, the Igloo might be the right fit for your life.
