Coleman Big Bay 20° Mummy Sleeping Bag Review

The Comfort Cuff design makes sure you only have soft fabric around your face while you sleep. Thanks to the ZipPlow zipper, you’ll get snag-free opening and closing every time. Packing up is made easy with the Wrap ‘N’ Roll system. Hybrid-shaped bag, with a mummy-shaped head and a rectangular bottom for extra foot space. The Big Bay is best suited for car camping, road tripping, backyard sleepovers and other adventures where you don’t need to carry it that far.

The Big Bay is also available in a Big and Tall Contour version for $130, which is a few inches taller and broader in the shoulders, hips and feet, so it’s not quite a mummy bag and not quite a rectangle. I didn’t test the big and tall version, but the hood design, insulation, draft tube, neck collar and zipper are all the same. The polyester face fabric is durable, so it doesn’t need to be treated as delicately as some premium bags that require special care. You can wash the Big Bay in a front-loading washing machine on gentle with mild liquid detergent and run it through a low-heat dryer cycle. I’ve laundered the Big Bay once, and the insulation has stayed in place.

I slept, napped and lounged in each sleeping bag. In a controlled environment, I ran a heat-retention test using a wire probe thermometer and hot water bottles. I also laundered each bag at home using my front-loading washing machine and dryer. As I was testing, I considered qualities like comfort, warmth, design features, ease of use, durability, packability and versatility. The Big Bay is a mummy-style sleeping bag, starting wide at the shoulders and tapering around the feet. Mummy bags are becoming more popular because they’re lightweight and packable, and they’re easier for your body to heat up and keep warm (a sleeping bag is not inherently warm—your body heat gets trapped inside).

Once you’re done, scroll down to select the item quantity. We’ve tested several versions of the Brazos over the years, and we were impressed with this latest model’s ability to resist water. In the past, the Brazos performed very poorly in our water tests. Despite a synthetic outer shell, we were surprised to see it soak up water rather quickly.

It’s a suitable choice for someone who wants to start camping but doesn’t want to shell out a ton of money for a more performance-oriented sleeping bag. Coleman Brazos sleeping bag is designed for outdoor camping in moderately cold temperatures. You don’t need to wash your sleeping bag after every camping trip, but you should clean it once or twice a year, depending on how much you use it. Using a front-loading washing machine (never use a top-loading agitator-style machine), wash your sleeping bag with a small amount of mild liquid detergent on a warm, gentle cycle and rinse it with cold water. Coleman recommends using a fabric softener, but do not use bleach.
