Captain Black Regular Pipe Tobacco 7 oz Can

It’s an iconic package that is easy to recognize for anyone who has been in the hobby for awhile. The latest iteration gives us a simplified, almost clip art rendition of the three-master, which gives it a stripped down, timeless appearance. If there are any tobacco snobs reading this, and you’re already rolling your eyes, just wait until I tell you what I smoked this in. Captain Black Gold has next to no development, sticking with a hay-berry-salt-vinegar-lemon Virginia profile with just a touch of Vanilla on top. Captain Black Gold smells like cigarettes which you tried to cover up with dollar store vanilla body spray.

Captain Black Pipe Tobacco has become one of the best selling pipe tobacco brands in America. Captain Black Pipe tobacco is a blend created during a time when pipe smoking was far more prevalent than any other form of tobacco smoking. Released in 1956, Captain Black pipe tobacco became and remains among the best-selling pipe tobaccos in the United States. Captain Black is suitable for both a beginner and experienced pipe smoker, depending on the pipe tobacco you choose.

SMOKE & ROOM NOTEThe heavy cavendish component gives all of these tobaccos a silky mouthfeel, but the smoke is strangely thin. Captain Black Gold is much more natural in aroma, hay, a hint of vanilla, and bit of an ammonia off-note. MacBaren has a full line of Captain Black inspired tobaccos which are usually ranked higher than the original, all under the Seven Seas line.

The first time I smoked Captain Black Gold, I was drinking a Cabernet Sauvignon and it just didn’t work. I thought I didn’t like the Gold, but on my second try with just a glass of water, I enjoyed it much more. The Gold is the naturally sweetest of the three. There are lots of sugars in this, and it can bite you if you push it too hard, but it is still a nice sweet Virginia. In the photo and descriptions above, you can see a side by side comparison of the different tobaccos that make up each blend, how they look and taste different. All three are mellow with a pleasant taste and room note.

However, it is officially “regular” if you read the manufacturer’s website. In summary for a new smoker with numerous options available to smoke, I would avoid these. For an old hand who is looking for an intro to aromatics, well, again I’d not recommend Captain Black at all. However for those hard up, in countries with limited tobacco distribution, or if you are in the sticks without your tobacco, there is good flavor in these blends, but be ye warned about the burn. BURN EXPERIENCEThis is the true downfall of the Captain Black Blends.

You usually find Captain Black at various chain stores that sell pipe tobacco such as CVS Drug Stores, Walmart and other chains. Don’t let the chosen distribution chain for Captain Black fool you. It is just as good, and even better than some specialty tinned pipe tobaccos. If ohm tobacco you’re looking for a sweeter smoke, Captain Black Gold Pipe Tobacco offers a sweet golden Virginia taste produced by matured golden cavendish tobaccos. The tangy citrus and grassy hints of the gold cavendish accompany a mildly sweet, consistent, and one-dimensional flavor.
