PETERSON: Peterson accessories and briar pipes

He cleaned out the inside of the sump in the shank and the airway in the stem with alcohol, cotton swabs and pipe cleaners. He scrubbed the exterior of the stem with Soft Scrub to remove as much of the oxidation and calcification as possible. He soaked the stem in Before & After Deoxidizer and rinsed it off with warm water. Without turning this into a physics lesson, let’s make this short and sweet. The chamber and bowl size is normal, so you still get a good long smoke, but your jaw won’t get tired as easily. The pipes feature a rock-like rustication in a tan and brown treatment and have bright metal bands and black vulcanite stems.

Charles Peterson would turn their world upside down when he entered their pipe shop armed with a revolutionary new pipe idea and some pretty ambitious plans for the future of their business. I continue to accept and receive pipes that come to me as donations for the SA Foundation (safoundation.com). The SA Foundation is an organization that has been serving sexually exploited women and their children for over 30 years by providing housing, recovery and skill development. The currently have a 70% success rate with the women they serve.

Virginia smokers will notice it more than English or aromatic users. I sometimes have applied a bit of activated charcoal powder to my pipe mud, or even applied a spot of the maple syrup / charcoal carbon cake on top of the dried pipe mud to good effect. Every pipeman peterson pipes (or woman) will have their own set of cautions. For me over the years, I’ve taken to leaving a strong pocket flashlight next to my pipe racks and ashtrays, and whenever I dump out the ashes—especially on a pipe I’m breaking in—I take a look inside the bowl.

We’ve seen enormous change in our century-and-a-half of pipemaking. Our retail store and factory have moved locations and our ownership has changed hands over the decades. Within a year, Frederick employed a young Latvian woodworker named Charles Peterson to help with production and repairs.

The P-Lip mouthpiece is also made with vulcanite, a superior high-grade product. Some pipemen advocate a slow build-up of tobacco, beginning with an eighth-bowl. Some say to never smoke a pipe to the bottom of the bowl (which could cause the airway to char as well as incite a burnout), some say you need a cake on the bottom as well. I can only give you my history, which is probably not as wise as other smokers. I pack the pipe almost to the rim and try to be very aware when I’m smoking it for the first six or eight bowls.

When the bowl gets hot, I just let it rest for a few minutes until it feels warm or comfortable, then relight. I try to be especially cautious toward the end of the bowl, but at all times I’m trying to be aware if I can taste or smell wood. If you’re an indoor smoker, this is of course much easier to do and a tell-tale sign that a burnout is beginning.

Of course every great smoking pipe needs filled with quality tobacco and Peterson provides plenty of selection. Their pipe tobacco includes traditional, aromatic, latakia, and seasonal selections.
