Your air purifier will alert you to a dirty filter by flashing its filter change indicator light. You’ll also want to make sure nothing is blocking the grilles either in or out of the device. Nothing should be resting on top of the outflow, and nothing should block the intake grille. Lastly, if the device is on Turbo or Auto mode, it may run the air purifier at a higher fan speed which is louder. First, a pre-filter takes care of typical household odors and VOCs (volatile organic compounds aka gases emitted from certain products).
It wasn’t by any means unbearable, but not silent by any stretch of the imagination. Medium speed was surprisingly bearable, although the computer speakers had to be cranked significantly to hear anything on the computer. With an active cigarette, medium speed was sufficient to keep the air clear while the cigarette was burning.
If you were a chain-smoker, medium would probably be the minimum setting you’d get away with, although you could use low while you slept. If the HPA3300 is too expensive, I’d recommend our budget pick, the Lasko LP300. It currently costs about $87 and has affordable filter replacements.

I really like my air purifiers they’re working great so glad I bought them. Given that it’s quieter, has a higher CADR rating, oscillates, and can be found for the same sale price as the black one, I’d easily recommend this one over the others for smoke. Even at regular price, it’s worth the extra $20 over the black model. Issues with the main filter are… it has to be vacuumed. The ability for your vacuum to actually suck out all the small particles plugging the filter in the first place is up for debate.
We’ve tested many Dyson purifiers over the years, most recently (2019) the Pure Cool TP04 and Pure Hot+Cool HP04. Neither model measured up well against our top pick, the Coway Mighty. We have also found no evidence that the fan function on Dyson purifiers makes them superior to other purifiers in the distribution of filtered air throughout a room.
