Kent’s low-cost full-suspension mid-drive e-bike has Walmart moving on up

Simple front and rear suspension offer a bit of spring without costing an arm and a leg. A 7-speed Shimano transmission may be low-end, but it is at least a name-brand component. And the mechanical disc brakes are likely plenty for a 250W bike that isn’t going to get up to 20 mph (32 km/h) very quickly. Then one day, a fellow mountain biker asked if I wanted to ride his bike around the parking lot. After a few seconds of strenuous pedaling, the bike suddenly took off with explosive force. It was an e-bike, an electric pedal-assist MTB with a motor that engages when an internal sensor encounters a hill.

Most of these buyers probably haven’t ridden a bicycle in decades and are looking for a cheap and non-intimidating way to get back on the bike. Retailing for under $700 (around £515/AU$970), the Kent Electric Cruiser was created for them. The idea of the bill is to provide extra incentives to purchase e-bikes (note the bill does not apply to pedal bicycles) in the hope they will replace cars and car journeys – in other words it’s designed to be an environmental piece of legislation.

If you want to check the precise laws for your own state check out People for Bikes excellent state by state guide to the rules on e-bikes. I realize these are “tetherless,” but scooters laying on the sidewalk is unacceptable. I don’t know the answer to this problem, but the city and the company need to ensure the sidewalks are clear and kent bike safe. However, on Wednesday, April 13, when I drove by the University Inn, I was not pleased to see TWO scooters laying down in the middle of the sidewalk. I have seen them just laying down in the grass beside a sidewalk. On my test ride, I chose a 5-mile path at Smithgall Woods State Park that alternated between asphalt and gravel.

Users who answer the entirety of  SPIN’s safety quiz correctly can also receive a $5 credit, as well as the chance to order a free helmet. SPIN will be hosting tabling events and safety events where students can earn riding credit and helmets. These are typically 24” or 26” mountain bikes, but the Kent Torpedo is particularly striking because it’s a 20” bike. With 28 percent of bike-sharing systems incorporating e-bikes in 2019 (the last year for which statistics are available) according to the North American Bikeshare Association ,it seems 2021 could well see e-bike share grow even further. NABA’s 2019 figures also found e-bikes were used some 1.7 times more than traditional bikes.

Van Dessel plans to race the Captain Shred in this year’s World Mountain Bike Championships, where the UCI has sanctioned its first e-MTB world championship series. The Japanese electronics giant, which posted sales of more than $73 billion in 2018, said the system is not just another electric bike motor. ‘The global rollout will see VanMoof open a network of state-of-the-art Service Hubs and certified partner workshops over the next six months….It comes at a crucial time for VanMoof, with e-bike sales more than tripling in the last 12 months. That’s a fivefold increase in riders since 2019, a growth that calls for smarter measures – both online and offline – to achieve truly next-level service.

For our third eMTB trip, I chose a 16-mile gravel forest service road in nearby Helen, Georgia. The first half was mainly uphill and the bikes performed magnificently. The last 7 miles turned kent mountain bike into an obscure, unmaintained dirt/gravel downhill road covered in sticks, pinecones, sharp rocks, and other precarious tire-popping rubbish (along with a wild turkey I almost ran over).

Add in a bundle of accessories and it all means ‘you can dare to replace your second car with a Makki’ according to Gazelle. There is comfortable looking bench seating, storage drawer and a rain hood. Note that low power e-bikes like this are generally legal for children to ride in many US states and in most European countries, though in the UK you need to be 14 to ride an e-bike.

When I sold the CrossFit gym and moved to Gainesville, Georgia, I lost all of my MTB-riding friends, so my bike went into storage. This year, I introduced my wife Haley to some local beginner singletrack in our new town of Cleveland, Georgia, and she loved it. I installed new front forks on my bike, purchased her a ride, and we started making the weekly trek for a short 30-minute trail excursion.

The bike comes about 75% pre-assembled, and I only needed to attach the front wheel and fender, handlebars and saddle. Things started off on the wrong foot when I realized some of the seat post assembly pieces were missing. (Luckily, my kent electric bike local bike co-op was able to hook me up with the needed parts!) But that was really the only major problem with assembly. Speaking of steps, the step-thru frame comes in only one size but should fit most riders five feet and taller.
