While discerning photographers, such as yours truly, might be able to tell the difference between a photo printed on the XP-8600 vs one printed on a professional photo printer, the general public probably will not. Replenishing the entire set will run you around $70 and, depending on how much you print, this can add up fast. Otherwise though, we’d recommend the XP-8600 to any photographer who’s looking to quickly turn the images sitting on their hard drives or mobiles devices into attractive photo prints. As with most pro photo printers, the Epson R2400 has only the very simplest of controls, as most of the printing controls are conducted through the software. The power button’s function is obvious, and it sits at the bottom of the stack of four buttons. Above sits the roll paper button, which allows for feeding and positioning of the paper.

As good as these values are, we expected more from such a high-end photo printer geared toward black-and-white printing. The R2400 exhibited the least color error in the orange, magenta, and purple patches. The most error occurred in the red, yellow, green, and blue colors, but these values were still way below any other printer tested.
My hope when receiving this printer was that it would make printing photos easy and that the prints would look nice. In addition, EcoTank printers also save you money on ink because they use refill bottles of ink and you don’t have to refill them very frequently. The XP-8600 took about a minute to print out 8.5 x 11-inch photos at the highest resolution and about 30 seconds for 4×6 snapshots. So, if you’re in a hurry to make a bunch of photo prints but don’t want to compromise on quality, the XP-8600 won’t slow you down.
You should also consider what Epson printer accessories you need with your large format machine. Some paper types require specialized tools to trim the spool at the end of a project, while maintenance and cleaning tools are essential to keep the printer functioning normally. Some snapshot printers can print from a computer over a USB connection, but most are really meant as standalone devices for use with phones or tablets. Older models tend to come with Wi-Fi connectivity, and many can print directly from PictBridge-supporting cameras and memory cards or USB flash drives.
