Letters: Thoughts on e-bikes in Kent

The handlebar-mounted controller display has 3 speed settings, letting you easily switch between electric assist modes, and provides up to 40 miles of boosted range. Whether you’re commuting to work or running errands around town, the 700c Kent kent bikes Hybrid E-Bike is the perfect companion for an efficient and enjoyable ride. The advantages of mid-drive motors, though, mean that you’ll usually find them on higher-end electric bikes, whereas low-cost electric bikes tend to favor hub motors.

The motor doesn’t add any assist unless the rider is pedaling, and the assist cuts out immediately when pedaling stops. The brake levers that control a pair of V-brakes also have sensors to cut motor power any time the brakes are pulled. The motor is supplied by an adorable little 24V 5.2Ah battery with just 125 Who of capacity.

The Kent Electric Cruiser’s 350W rear-hub motor was more than capable on the flat roads and bike paths around my home, easily reaching and staying at 20 mph. But when the bike was pointed uphill, the performance was much less impressive. With me pedaling and the power assist at maximum, my speed frequently dropped down into the single digits on steep hills. Our Prices range from less than £500 right up to our exquisite carbon-frame e-bikes at £10000.

The Kent Torpedo kid’s electric bike is an excellent pick if you want something economical yet top-notch for your little ones. With its 180W motor, 6-speed gearing, and LED display, your kids can enjoy a smooth and tailored ride. The 10.4-amp hour battery promises around 1 hour 20 minutes of run time, or around 25 miles, using the electric assist at varying levels over the course of the ride.

However, here in the UK (where legally you need to be over 14 to ride one) a number of firms have been selling them for a while now – including major names like Scott, Cube and Moustache. Having not ridden Kent’s new e-bike (yet, but hopefully that changes), it’s hard for me to judge it too hard on the spec sheet alone. But for the $1,498 price, it’s at least an interesting addition to a slew of Walmart e-bikes that so far haven’t taken a shot at such higher-end (or perhaps even midlevel) markets. Kent currently offers three electric models for adults, plus one for kids. Alongside the 27-inch Kent Electric and Kent Step-Through Electric, the Cruiser is more of a unisex offering and is available exclusively from Walmart.

If riders score 100% on the quiz, they will earn $5 in Spin credit. Second, at $500 and with free shipping, these bikes are about half the price of other brands. Kent’s specialty brands, Van Dessel and Univega, this spring will launch the company’s first e-bike models incorporating new Panasonic mid-drive systems. The e-bikes will be assembled in Kent’s South Carolina factory and sold in North America and Europe. Panasonic intends to announce partnerships with other U.S. and European brands in the coming months.

These super custom e-bikes were part of the Gates E-Bike Showcase on display at the North American Handmade Bicycle Show in Charlotte, NC. And because it is a dual drive bike, it has an extra wide 2.1-inch tire that fits perfectly with its structure. To turn on the bike, you need to first hit a button underneath the battery, then another on the LED display. The battery’s kent electric bike on button isn’t in a highly visible place but is slightly raised so you can find it by touch. On my second test ride, a short 4-mile singletrack trail my wife and I ride each week, I popped both the front and rear tire tubes, probably due to my weight stressing the tubes. Popping a tube wouldn’t be so bad, except I had to walk the bike the remainder of the trail.
