Letters: Thoughts on e-bikes in Kent

I chose the Kent 27.5” from Walmart for a couple of reasons. Reviews often mentioned bad batteries, broken bike parts, or other annoying setbacks, and having a 90-day return policy was extremely important for peace of mind. Second, at $500 and with free shipping, these bikes are about half the price of other brands. I’m not an influencer, and I don’t want you to visit my website or youtube channel. I’m just a guy who rides MTBs and wanted to get an ebike bc I’m tired of pedaling uphills on long trails. Kent’s specialty brands, Van Dessel and Univega, this spring will launch the company’s first e-bike models incorporating new Panasonic mid-drive systems.

The motor doesn’t add any assist unless the rider is pedaling, and the assist cuts out immediately when pedaling stops. The brake levers that control a pair of V-brakes also have sensors to cut motor power any time the brakes are pulled. The motor is supplied by an adorable little 24V 5.2Ah battery with just 125 Who of capacity. In low power mode, the battery is sufficient for 15 miles (25 km) of range. Of course, if the battery ever runs out, the e-bike simply turns back into a standard pedal bike.

SPIN can be contacted to pick up or remove any eBikes(s) or eScooter(s) from campus and/or other Kent locations. In the case of Kent’s mid-drive electric bike, seen above, it’s not clear exactly which 250W motor is used. Nicer (i.e., more expensive) e-bikes tend to use fancier mid-drive motors like those made by Brose, Bosch, Yamaha, and other major German or Japanese manufacturers. If you’re looking for an inexpensive ebike for casual weekend rides, the Kent Electric Cruiser demands consideration.

The e-bikes will be assembled in Kent’s South Carolina factory and sold in North America and Europe. Panasonic intends to announce partnerships with other U.S. and European kent bikes brands in the coming months. Lukas also said if riders do not park their vehicles in the correct zones they will continue to be charged until it is corrected.

Students and community members around Kent’s campus will have a new way to get around starting March 7. The Portager is a locally owned news source serving Portage kent bikes County, Ohio.
