Coleman Instant 12′ x 10′ Backhome Screenhouse with Sidewall

Thanks to all of the open mesh and optional window covers, it is extremely well-ventilated with or without the rainfly. We set up the REI Screen House Shelter and L.L.Bean’s Woodlands Screen House side by side in the Mojave Desert in 100-degree temps. Fellow campers consistently gravitated toward the coleman canopy REI shelter over the L.L.Bean. Compared with our top day-tent pick, the L.L.Bean Woodlands Screen House uses arguably superior materials; it also comes with an unsurpassed warranty.

We later used the shelters on group trips at Wheeler Gorge Campground near Ojai, California, and at the La Jolla group campsite at Point Mugu, as well as on a trip to the El Mirage Dry Lake in the Mojave Desert. We eliminated canopies that were not big enough to comfortably shelter a picnic table, concluding that a table is probably the number-one spot where campers would place such a structure. We also eliminated bulky, heavy shelters that are intended to be used as semipermanent backyard fixtures. If you love camping but hate eating your morning pancakes in the rain, a canopy tent can protect you from the trifecta of bugs, sun, and sudden showers.

Getting in and out of the Evanston is also oddly difficult, as the doors only open halfway. Not only does this make things awkward, it is impossible to inflate or deflate your beds anywhere but inside the tent. They added windows on each side because the door only opens halfway, which places a large seam right down the middle. We should also point out that there are no clips or ties to tuck them away when the windows are open, so they just dangle in the wind.

Remove the included rainfly to let in more sunlight through the mesh roof on dry days or to gaze up at the stars on dry nights. Any $75 canopy tent from a big-box store—we’re talking about the common square canopy with four spindly metal legs—can provide shade during midday. But when you’re camping or eating outdoors, you’ll likely want protection from insects, as well. That’s why we focused on collapsible camping shelters with mesh walls to keep bugs at bay.

Add only two pockets and a weight of 20.9 lbs, and you get a tent that scores very low in the ease of use category. The Coleman Evanston has features that fail miserably in all but very specific situations. The fully netted and sealed floor performs quite well on warm days and bug-filled nights, but outside of that, it just doesn’t stack up. With the net in place, you have two access points with vertical zippers, the doors are on the opposite sides. But this is a large structure and in view of this, taking it down or setting it up is rather easy, and the word ‘instant’ in the name is quite justified. They claim you need about three minutes and three steps to set it up. The picture below shows one of the stages in the setup before extending its legs.
