They understand that not everybody has hundreds of dollars to spend on a cooler but they still want a high-quality product that can retain ice for an acceptable period and also stand up to the wears and tears of regular use. External patterns and color schemes and even attractive metal coolers are coleman canopy part of their vast selection. So for those of you who want something that looks as good as it performs then you should be covered. That being said, they do still keep their highly-regarded and conventional cooler designs such as the Coleman Chest mostly unaltered to appeal to the old-school crowd.
Hard-sided coolers from Yeti, RTIC, Orca, and others are able to keep ice frozen for significantly longer than budget options from companies like Coleman or Igloo. And while bags of ice come relatively cheap, it can be a real pain to have to drain your cooler and replace the ice on a daily basis (not to mention having to travel and purchase more of it). Another benefit of high-end hard-sided units is durability—the difference in quality is immediately apparent and some of the best out there are truly meant to last a lifetime. All that said, if you just need a reliable cooler for days at the beach or packing a lunch on the road, it’s probably a good idea to save your cash. But if you consistently head outside for days at a time, the investment is well worth it.
Some also boast drainage channels that funnel water through the opening, which is a nice touch for helping with the clean-up process. Yeti’s Roadie 24 and Pelican’s 20QT Elite are two notable exceptions that don’t come with drain plugs, which can make dumping out extra water a bit of a hassle. On a test roster that includes $330 coolers, the price of the Steel Belted model seems downright affordable. However, for the insulating value, something like the Best Buy winning Coleman 62 Xtreme Wheeled cooler is a far better deal. One will pay a bit of a premium for the nostalgic and easily cleaned steel construction of the Steel Belted cooler. The design and convenience of the Party Stacker are fantastic as you can easily stack them on top of each other to take up hardly any space. But for this convenience, you have to deal with poor insulation and very lackluster ice life.
We also started tracking the internal temperature of the coolers with the ThermoWorks Signals thermometer to see exactly when temperatures began to rise. Simply put, coolers are unlike most other categories of outdoor gear that may last for just for a couple seasons before needing to be replaced. This means that when you’re making the calculation of whether spending $300 or $400 on a cooler is worth it, you are getting a product that literally should last for decades. That said, if you don’t need multi-day ice retention, even a cheaper hard-sided cooler should be around for many years as well.
A very user-friendly and cheap backpack that retains most of the mobility of a traditional backpack. It has an adequate amount of storage space for a small excursion but don’t expect this to hold ice for very long. It has long enough ice life for a day’s outing and comes with solid and proven construction. Our only issue is that the lid doesn’t like to stay open but for the attractive price, it is easy to deal with.
