Tires were a slight issue due to riding the bike on trails that are littered with debris and sharp objects that may cause frustration when they get lodged into your tire. While tires were a normal wear-and-tear thing (as the bike was ridden nearly daily over the span of time I had it, as long as the weather was good), the bike started huffy bikes having other issues. One of the first issues I had with this bike was a flat tire after my grandfather massively overinflated (and blew) a tire with his air compressor. Huffy bikes are generally quite low end bikes as well. You didn’t specify the age of the bikes, but it sounds like they’ve been sitting around unused for a while.
If you take off the components you mentioned, then essentially what you will have are a low-end out-of-date frame and wheels. If you can get the bikes back into working order without investing too much money, then I’d say just ride them and fix them until they die. If you’d like higher gear ratios, it is not expensive to swap a casette or freehub.

The best size bike for a 4-year-old is either a 12-inch or 14-inch wheel. Similarly, the right size bike for a 5-year-old could range from a 16-inch to 18-inch wheel. Keep in mind that the height of your child can make a difference in what size bike you choose. For example, a child who is 7 years old but closer to 50 inches tall may do better with an 20-inch wheel, rather than an 18-inch wheel.
These bikes usually come from the factory with all bearings too tight. Check both hubs, the bottom bracket and the headset before riding.
