Any leak is unacceptable and must be located before you light it. This Coleman 200A lantern has been modified with an elaborate globe cage and 3 cylindrical globes, the innermost being a Fresnel lens. An outer infrared filter keeps visible light from shining out the sides. This lantern coleman canopy was made for the military to help direct planes to airfields in or near enemy territory. These lanterns, dated June ’59, are in Mike Rainey’s (left) & Dean DeGroff’s (right) collections. By November, 1951, Coleman’s Model 200A had been introduced, replacing Model 200 above.
This allows you to bring many lanterns on a week long trip and not worry about charging all week. The Coleman will not make it through a week long camping trip unless you use it sparingly. Although you may not be able to buy this exact one these days, they do make a similar one. The other thing to notice is the the color of the light. The gas lantern gives off a very warm yellow light.
Until early 1934 all of the founts of these two models were stamped 220B on the bottom. These models could be purchased with either a Pyrex (left) or mica globe (right).
