Among the former is Schwinn, which has stood as one of the mainstays of the bicycle industry for over 125 years, and has recently released the Coston DX e-bike. Biking season is on the way, so we thought now would be a good time to share our review of the Schwinn Coston DX. At level 5, the throttle propels you up to 20 miles per hour and disengages if you go faster than that (for example, if you go downhill). Class 2 e-bikes are required to stop assistance past 20 miles per hour.

Road or trail grit will stay out, and chain oil will stay in. They can do this because all the shifting is done in the rear hub – so it’s a straight, simple chainline with nothing other than two sprockets and a chain. I really, really like this feature – I can ride it in long pants and not get dirty, and if I take it on a dusty trail, the chain will stay clean and grit-free. This is awesome, and I’d love to see more bikes doing something like this. While it could use a little boost to a 500 watt motor to help on the hills, the smaller motor keeps the price lower.

On the right is the shifter for the Shimano Nexus 8 speed rear hub. It shows you what gear you’re in (1 is low, 8 is high), and you twist it to shift. Quick, easy, and when properly adjusted, surprisingly nice. I really do like this controller for the shifting. By default, the console shows the battery left, speed, total distance and pedal assist level. All Schwinn electric bikes have a top speed of 20mph.

The RPE Charger Scheme should match these colors, do not mix match the color as it could cause harm to the battery. It is recommend that you use the EMP Low current charger; if not do not exceed 7 amps of charger current or you will risk damaging the barrel connectors charging wire. My testing has been done on gravel roads and wet, muddy trails at around 5° C with a bit of snow on the ground. The battery fits inside the bottom tube of the bike which gives it a sleek look. The bike accelerates fine on flat ground, but you’ll definitely need to add some leg assist if you’re going to be climbing tall hills. An interesting feature I’ve not seen before is a wheel lock. The upper horseshoe-shaped thing is a keyed wheel lock that lets you run a metal bar through the spokes. This keeps the rear wheel attached, and also prevents someone from biking off with it. It’s no substitute for a chain, but in a friendly community (such as a retirement community on a lake somewhere), it’s probably good enough. In any case, it’s one of the better stock seats I’ve seen on an electric bike so far. Nice job here – this seat is absolutely suited to what the bike is good for.

This offers plenty of cushion for off-road riding, or in case you hit any potholes on the way to work. While each and every comes with a step-through frame, some come with more accessories than others, such as integrated LED lights, fenders, or a rear rack. I mostly used the motor in pedal-assist mode, though I will cover the throttle in the next section. The motor on this bike is very aggressive in that is starts up quickly with even the slightest movement of the pedal, and it goes hard. When riding with level 5 assistance my pedals were free-spinning most of the time even on the highest gear. As a commuter e-bike, I’m also glad to see some good commuter specific parts, like the included fenders and the excellent lighting.

Headlights, taillights, and integrated frame lights help you see and be seen in low-light conditions. Easily recharge in as little as 4 hours with a standard household outlet and the included charging cable. E-bike batteries can be removed for charging or storage. Electric bikes put extra power behind every pedal so you can ride farther, take on bigger hills, and enjoy cycling more than ever before. The SCiB batteries are power dense, charge insanely fast, are proprietary and un-obtainable by normal people, and just don’t make sense for an electric bicycle. In a nutshell, it’s a 24v, 4AH battery pack composed of reasonably exotic lithium titanate cells.

But it’s just not a good bike for this – it’s heavy and slow. The motor can draw over 200 watts at peak output, so the battery pack is good for less than half an hour of full assist before it’s stone dead. Fortunately, it doesn’t run at full assist all the time. You have to turn the switch on first, then turn on the bike from the handlebars. I suspect this is designed to reduce battery drain when idle, but it doesn’t really work. There’s not a great spot for the wheel lock key, though you can sort of wedge it into the frame if you try.
