Tobacco pipes Peterson

It was a curiously shaped bit for the time, and still is to this day, yet its design was meant to serve a three-fold function. After I have reshaped the button and repaired the divots and cut areas on the stem it was time to sand the whole stem with the micromesh sanding pads. The sanding process blends in the repaired areas with the rest of the stem surface. I started sanding the stem with 1500 grit micromesh and worked on the edges of the button on the top side and also the ridge on the underside. I wanted these sharp edges to be clearly defined so I spent extra time with the coarser grit in order to sharpen these edges (Photos 48 – 49).

, made in Ireland, provide the pipe smoker with a wide selection of briars. According to many smokers, Peterson pipes are some of the best tobacco pipes because of the Peterson System and Peterson mouthpiece, which give the smoker a cool, dry, and comfortable smoking experience. Today, more than 150 years later, our patented System pipes and Classic designs can be found in brick and mortar and online retailer shops across the globe. We’ve seen enormous change in our century-and-a-half of pipemaking.

The rim top was burned and darkened with nicks and notches around the top and inner edge. I also took close up photos of the stem to show the lack of tooth marks and chatter on the stem surface. One of the things I appreciate about Jeff’s cleanup is that he works to protect and preserve the nomenclature on the shank of the pipes that he works on. The stamping on this one was very faint to start with so I was worried that it would disappear altogether with the cleanup.

The history of these pipes indeed goes back to a long time ago, the firm “Kapp & Peterson” being one of the oldest pipe manufacture still producing. Smokers like the Peterson quality and some only swear by Peterson pipes. Among all the Peterson pipes, we chose to present you here the Army collection. As the name suggests, each Peterson Army pipe has an “Army” or “Military” tenon, and the shank is strengthened thanks to a band. Depending on the models, you will find nickel or silver bands. In any case, these are robust pipes because the mortise is strengthened by this band.

The System Pipe is still a consistent top seller for Peterson. The Peterson System is still the most popular line Peterson produce, chacom tobacco pipes along with the P-Lip mouthpiece. Each briar pipe is made in the Dublin factory by skilled craftsmen and enjoyed the world over.

The Peterson brand was embraced by politicians, business leaders, sportsmen, artists and writers. Generally when pipe smokers get together and discuss the system pipes they are divided as towhether they like or dislike them,in particular the P lip stem which has many detractors. Of course smallerpipes are more problematic than the larger ones, coupled to the stem shape being more angular infull bent examples. I have never really found this to be too much of a problem as I will use thesmaller finer pipe cleaners such as those made by Falcon, which seem to pass easily. As young Latvian talented pipe maker from Riga, Charles Peterson joined Kapp in 1865.

The old shop on Grafton Street, which was all on one level and had limited space to accommodate large amounts of display stock. The new premises is on four levels, plus a tasteful basement lounge area dedicated to large displays of Cigars and walk in humidor. Knowing Tom and his dedication to his company image and promotion, I am sure that all will be completed and up and running for the celebration of the company’s 150 year anniversary celebrations in 2015. In this group you will find the basic entry level pipes which many smokers desire and are most comfortable with for every day and rotation use.

On the right side it is stamped Made in the Republic of Ireland and the shape number 11S. The silver band is stamped Peterson’s over Dublin on the left side. On the underside it bears the three hallmarks, the last of which is a lower case “d” which dates the pipe as having been made in 1971 captain black tobacco as opposed to the date of 1973 Mark noted above. A first pass over the pipe showed that the finish was in quite good shape. I was dirty and a thin coat of grime and oily dirt had dulled the finish of the bowl. There were no serious dents or scratches on the bowl or rim (Photos 1 – 2).

The same procedure was later adopted for the next series, Return of Sherlock Holmes. The Peterson Manx (Laxey Pipes Ltd.) Isle of Man factory partnership ceased operation about 1981 and the production of all African Meerschaum pipes was moved to Dublin and continued there until 1986. Charles Peterson died shortly after retiring and moving to Hamburg in Germany in 1919 where he is buried. The original 1890 ‘system’ pipe patent expired at around this time.

We also have a huge selection of Savinelli Pipes, Rattray’s Pipes and pipe tobacco. Frederick would soon bring on Latvian immigrant Charles Peterson, and they went about renovating their styles and beginning a brand new way to think about and craft a tobacco pipe. By 1896, they were getting recognized in the 1896 International Tobacco Trades Exhibition in London with two gold medals, for “Best Finished Pipe” and “Best Patent Pipe.” I have included some photos of examples from my own collection to help illustrate the diversity ofshape and finish of choices available. The Peterson Lip further enhances the effectiveness of the graduated bore by directing the flow ofsmoke upwards and away from the tongue.
