Last year I bought a Coleman 8 Man Instant Tent, since I usually camp alone it looked like a good product. I spent three weeks going up the Arkansas river valley in Colorado from Salida to Leadville prospecting for gold. The first day I set the tent up the wind blew it over while I was setting it up, 3 “Knuckle” joints broke instantly, they are a part of the tent poles that allow the tent to “pop up”. This was not a strong wind, more like a gust in a breeze and should not have injured the tent at all.
Sometimes it’s nice to be able to come in and out both ends of a tent, especially if you’re pushing the capacity. Nobody likes being stepped over or having to step over others for a late-night bathroom trip. The setup and take down is pretty good, unless the tent is wet. Any rainwater comes in the tent poles have started to come apart the bag doesn’t fit. Have used it roughly once each year and I use it by myself or with only one other person, so not under heavy repeated use.If you want it to last, best not to force anything and follow the instructions on setup. To their credit, the floor of the Instant Tent is tarpaulin. Even then, it stops right at the edges and doesn’t run up the sides even a few inches to further guard against ground wetness. As long as the weather cooperates, you won’t have a problem, but if the forecast calls for much rain, you’ll want to look elsewhere for either a tent or a drier place to go camping. But the only problem is the plastic joints break and are hard to replace. I had one joint break which happened to be a corner joint and no parts were available and that they would be back orders for over a month.

Coleman’s patented and much ballyhooed WeatherTec technology only uses a weather-resistant, coated polyester fabric. This means that any part of the tent not covered by the rain fly will get wet and leak in moderate to heavy or consistent rain.
I cannot recomend this tent, the ease of putting the tent up stops as soon as these crucial parts break which happens almost instantly. I may just end up making my own parts out of aluminum or steel. Have used it roughly once each year and I use it by myself or with only one other person, so not under coleman instant tent heavy repeated use. Is it possible to setup the tent in one minute or less? The answer is yes, it can easily be setup in the time Coleman claims but most likely on the third or fourth attempt (in our experience). But if you take into account the time it takes to setup all the ground stakes provided, you are looking at close to six minutes of total setup time in which you have a fully erected and stable tent. During our camping trip, we used the ground stakes for the base of the poles, and did not bother with the attached ropes. The Instant Tent 6 is set up pretty well for windy conditions.
